The Real Case (1985)
Maurice Theriault was a French-Canadian farmer living in Warren, Massachusetts, whose life was marked by extreme childhood trauma and abuse.
The "Possession": In 1985, Theriault and his family reported terrifying phenomena, including bi-location (being in two places at once), random blood appearing on his body and in his home, and displays of unnatural strength.
The Exorcism: A "full solemn exorcism" was performed by Bishop Robert McKenna on the day after Easter in 1985. This event is notable for being the first ever recorded on videotape.
Physical Phenomena: During the ritual, witnesses and investigators claimed Theriault's face physically distorted, his skin "bubbled," and a deep crack opened on his forehead while he bled from his eyes.
Tragic Outcome: Although the exorcism appeared successful for a few years, Theriault later shot his wife (wounding her) before committing suicide in 1992.
Skepticism and Interpretations
Critics and even family members have questioned the supernatural nature of the events:
Mental Health: Skeptics suggest Theriault's behavior was a manifestation of severe mental illness resulting from his abusive upbringing.
Medical Explanations: Some observers noted that his physical symptoms, like skin reopening, could be linked to medical deficiencies or the physiological effects of extreme stress.
The Warrens' Involvement: While the Warrens maintained that tables "rose off the floor" and doctors could not explain his condition, others believe the symptoms may have been exaggerated for the cameras.
