19/03/2026 13:38, Nick Boel -> Carlos Navarro:
I'm considering NOT adding the 'def_squote' setting (but still
supporting the user parameter 'squote').
The -smartquote setting would then enable quote reformatting to
Fido-style by default, but users could disable it with /squote=off (if
the sysop hasn't enabled it, users can activate it with /squote=on)
For me it would be fine this way, but, does anyone think there should be
a setting to disallow using this new "squote=on/off" parameter? This
way, sysops could "enforce" FTN-style or normal NNTP quoting.
If I remember right, I just took the default "smartquote" option and
made it user configurable also (ie: /smartquote=on/off). Which I also
did with a few other sysop-only configurable options at the time (ex: /tearline=on/off, /flowed=on/off, and probably others). Basically any
options that wouldn't compromise security but would be better off user configurable rather than forced via the config file.
I've checked, and you added the /smartquote and /notearline user
parameters in your forks, but /flowed (like /showto) was already present in the original.
Only difference is I didn't change the original keyword, wanting to
stick with what was already in place for most of those options.
I thought it could be better to use shorter parameter names, like
/flowed and /showto. I also didn't like the term "smartquote" (I would
have preferred something like "fidoquote" or "ftnquote"). Still, I may
change /squote to /smartquote like in your version.
