Spirit Airlines headed to bankruptcy

According to insiders who have requested anonymity, Spirit Airlines will go bankrupt this week. This is reported by news agency Bloomberg. The American airline is currently in Chapter 11 bankruptcy (a type of suspension of payments) for the second time in a few years.
The budget airline has taken heavy blows in recent years. Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Spirit has suffered billions of dollars in losses, while the aviation sector underwent radical changes. In addition, a planned merger with JetBlue failed, which further worsened the financial position.
In March 2026, Spirit emphasized that it planned to emerge from bankruptcy over the coming months, by early summer at the latest. But even before the recent sharp rise in oil prices, that plan seemed unrealistic. After all, Spirit is among the airlines with the worst margins in the sector. And that was even before the extra pressure of higher fuel costs was taken into account.
