When they said they were going to stop making Blu-ray discs, I figured it >BW> was a waste of money to buy one. It does not appear that they have
stopped just yet, though.

They've pretty much stopped making DVD's in favor of the higher resolution quality of the Blu-ray format. But at least if you upgrade your player you'll
be able to enjoy both formats. A lot of the players these days even support th
higher 4K standards.

At some point in the past year, it was announced that they would stop

Point being I am hesitant to buy one if they are going to turn around and
quit making them. ;)

But at least if you upgrade your player you'll be able to play pretty much every disk format out there, with the obvious exception of LaserDisk movies. And if you one of the players that also decodes the 3D films, you'll really be set. :)

You mentioned something about ripping in a previous message? I thought
that ripping blu rays was not really possible. I like making a copy of my
DVD episodes and movies so I can watch them on an SBC PC I have hooked up
to the TV.

Would be interested to know if BRs are any more likely to be copy-protected
or DRM'ed than DVDs are. I have only had one working DVD set that refused
to be ripped.

I am not even sure I've seen a PC blu ray reader.

Using MakeMKV, you can rip pretty much any BD (4K or regular) no matter the copy protection, if you've re-flashed the ROM on it and use MakeMKV, which
does the same thing as a player to break the protection while ripping. It's really nice and very reliable. You do need to do some research though.

I am not even sure I've seen a PC blu ray reader.

For the longest time all new PC's came with BR players, some even with recorders. I have an external USB drive that's both a player and recorder. You can get them off Amazon fairly cheaply.
