I thought we already HAD quantom computers. I remember reading about them a couple of years ago.
I thought we did, too, and apparently we do, but the current ones have
caveats:
They are not general purpose and only good for specialized tasks. They are
for research only -- currently mostly for trying to figure out how to make
them work as expected;
They are "noisy intermediate-scale quantum," meaning they are technically quantum -- they have real qubits -- but still suffer from error rates that limit what they can reliably do (sort of like AI);
No quantum computer today has accomplished any task with clear, practical economic advantage over classical supercomputers for real-world problems.
So the current ones are basically just less-reliable supercomputers that use qubits.
