James Gunn's Superman sequel might have a new title — and it doesn't make sense to me after what happened with Supergirl's name change

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a possible Superman sequel title change!

James Gunn's Superman sequel might have undergone a slight title tweak
It's been known as Man of Tomorrow since it was initially announced
If true, it would contradict Gunn's comments on Supergirl's name change

James Gunn's Superman sequel might have undergone a slight name change, based on a new report.

As part of a lengthy article that discusses the battle between Netflix and Paramount to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, Variety indicates that Gunn's next project is now called Superman: Man of Tomorrow.

If true, it would be an unexpected U-turn on Gunn's part. Indeed, when the DC Universe (DCU) co-chief first announced the follow-up to 2025's Superman film last September, many assumed it would be called Superman: Man of Tomorrow. However, as fans scratched their heads over whether that was its official title, Gunn soon clarified that it was simply called Man of Tomorrow.

Now, though, Variety seems to indicate that this isn't the case. All eyes are now trained on Gunn's social media accounts to see if he'll clear things up once and for all.

Why Man of Tomorrow's actual title matters

It's likely that Variety simply used the phrase Superman: Man of Tomorrow to outline that it's a direct sequel to Gunn's Superman film. After all, there may be some who'll read the aforementioned article and not know that Man of Tomorrow is a sequel to the Gunn-directed flick. The inclusion of 'Superman' in its title, then, would counteract any confusion.

However, if Gunn's next DCU Chapter One project is now officially titled Superman: Man of Tomorrow, it would contradict comments he made about changing the name of another DCU film. The project in question? Supergirl, one of 2026's most anticipated new movies and the next DC Studios movie that'll land in theaters this June.

Originally called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the movie adaptation of Tom King and Bilquis Eveley's comic book namesake was renamed Supergirl in June 2025. As part of a much longer answer that explained why Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is no longer the DC comic book movie's name, Gunn said: "I’m sick of the superhero title, colon, other-name thing."

If Gunn is that annoyed by movies that have subtitles, why would his next project have one? In light of what he's said about Supergirl's name change and his staunch stance on Superman 2 being called Man of Tomorrow, it wouldn't make sense if it's now called Superman: Man of Tomorrow. And, let's be honest, having the word 'Superman' immediately followed by 'Man' just sounds dumb.

As I mentioned earlier, hopefully Gunn will clarify the official name of his next film — which, per Variety, is expected to start filming in a few weeks' time ahead of its July 2027 release.
