Superman spin-off show gets major update from DCU co-chief James Gunn and there's one big thing that's not true about it

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has finally commented on reports regarding that rumored Superman off-shoot on HBO Max.

James Gunn has responded to reports that a Superman spin-off show is in development.

Last week, a number of trade outlets claimed Gunn's Superman movie was
getting a spin-off series on HBO Max . The project, which would apparently
star Jimmy Olsen, the Daily Planet reporter and unlikely ladies man played by Skyler Gisondo in Superman , was also believed to be called DC Crime .

Furthermore, the DC Universe ( DCU ) TV Original would reportedly feature the live-action debut of Gorilla Grodd. One of The Flash's most notable enemies, Grodd made a brief cameo in episode 4 of adult animated show Creature
Commandos , but will apparently be on key antagonist duties in DC Crime .

Taking to Threads after a much-needed vacation, though, Gunn categorically denied that one of the above rumors had any substance to it. Indeed, the DC Studios co-chief refuted suggestions that the program was called DC Crime , before indicating that other elements of what had been reported may be true.

"Just FYI," he wrote. "There has never been a project titled DC Crime in development, not even as a working title. I don't know where that came from
but it's weird. And, no, that doesn't mean all of the rest of the story is false."

Unfortunately, that's where Gunn's comments on the matter end for the time being. It's unclear, then, whether Olsen will be the HBO Max show's lead character, if Grodd is involved in this Superman off-shoot, and when we might see it.

Even so, the fact that Gunn didn't pore cold water on the whole thing is
proof that another post- Superman project is in the works at DC Studios. If
you weren't aware, the first of those is Man of Tomorrow , aka the movie
sequel to the aforementioned film that'll be released in July 2027.

Considering how much franchise building Superman had to do, some of its ensemble, including many of its Daily Planet characters, were reduced to bit-part roles. A DCU Chapter One spin-off focusing on this DC comic book institution would go a long way to remedying one of the biggest complaints
that some viewers, myself included, had with one of 2025's biggest new movies.
