• i am trying to setup a dos bbs locally using 86box, its painful

ms dos is such a pain to use and i say this as someone who likes the general unix extended universe cli and finds windows powershell to be honestly not that bad
like even with 4dos and win3.1 on so i can avoid most of the jank (especially file copying thats the entire reason windows is there) its still just
not fun to use or to setup
anyways im trying to get renegade working on 86box because i was doing dosbox before which the bbs itself did work on the issue was weird dosbox incompatibilities with the doors i was trying (since the entire purpose of setting up my own local dos bbs was to try out doors
i managed to get at least the bbs itself setup barring some weird issues in syncterm that i need to debug (i suspect telnet escape sequences since im using modem emulation to dial in because i dont know how to do telnet natively with renegade or any dos bbs package for that matter or even if you can)
im using renegade because of the dos bbs packages it seems probably the best for current use since its still updated for dos unlike the others
wwiv isnt y2k compliant and its user interface is kinda weird, synchronet complains and beeps a lot whenever i launch it but it doesnt stay on screen for me to see, i havent tried mystic (might at some point), generally unaware of other well supported dos bbs packages (well supported being relative considering all mentioned besides renegade are not updated anymore for dos of course)
    bleh
    bbs sysopping is hard work

You should try your hand at setting up a FIDONET node on your BBS. I've been working on it for at least 1/2 the day already. So much shit to do! LOL

i take this as a challenge
im actually working on a local majorbbs rn on a windows xp vm because im just using mbbs4ever for it
majorbbs is wacky since it seems like it had its own parallel ecosystem to the other bbs softwares
