• Upgrading synchronet

From Morningstarr@HOBBYSPC to ALL on Saturday, April 25, 2026 21:13:14
Have any of you guys dealt with an update to Synchronet? I have moved most my stuff in the mods directory, but I want to make sure I don't overwrite any of the mods I have done. I want to upgrade, I just don't want to lose "anything" I modded.
I got the feeling that's why some of my js mods, I created aren't working.

Only in so far as .msg files being modded -- never had issues with the current BBS and updatiing. Have done no custom scripts, but I would think the safe option would be to make whatever custom script you use have a unique filename and make SBBS run that instead of the stock module name so that you don't lose said modifications when the default (but now modded) module is updated. _________

I usually move them to the mods folder. I am stubborn and didn't move them all. So I will have to go make sure, they are all in there lol. If you move your mods to the mods folder synchronet won't overwrite them.

I'm about to do a hardware upgrade to JerseyJam.com and hoping the BBS will work as it was. I am taking a 1TB SSD drive from one of my Mac Mini's and replacing the HD in the other one that is running my BBS. The machines are identical except for the HD's. I already installed Windows Enterprise 10 LTSC 64bit on the new SSD (this year Mac Mini's can't run Win 11) , along with SBBS and all the needed drivers and such. I am hoping I can just replace the HD with the SSD and then copy over the SBBS directory with a backup of the running BBS and stuff will work just fine. I could just keep the SSD in the system it's currently in but I don't want to have to spend 2 hrs redoing all the firewall ports in my cable modem since it's all tied to the network mac address- LOL.

Have you done a HD replacement yet with SBBS - do you think just copying the SBBS directory over will work ok?

Just copy the files to the new hard drive. Shouldn't be a problem. I have done it before sir.

Well, dang it.... it just worked!! BBS is up and running on the other Mac mini with the SSD. I just got finished redoing all of the port forwards in my firewall. Super snappy now. That was easy!

Now - I'm converting the original Mac mini into an Unbuntu Shell Server and replacing the Raspberry Pi4 with it.

Are those mini's not supported by mac at all anymore?

Well the warranty is long gone and they stopped the ability to upgrade the OS to newer versions. However, thanks to the Open Source community, they developed a way to install the newest MacOS versions right up to the latest on old hardware with a product called OCLP "Open Core Legacy Patcher" which works AWESOME! https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/

My Mac Mini's now natively boots to Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC and the other now natively boots to Ubuntu 26.04. Ya see, Intel Mac's can run MacOS, Windows and Linux natively, Windows machines can only run Windows and Linux.

BTW - my new Ubuntu Linux Shell Server is up and running now available through my bbs - woohoo!

Been working on all of this since 8am this morning! LOL. Almost 12 hours.

What are some differences between osx and windows? Which is more intuitive to use? What about shortcuts and hotkeys? Does mac have a more polished feel, and is the software for mac more polished than windows?

If you want to upgrade your system always make sure you make a tar file
of the directory before you do a git pull or whatever.

I am definitely going to make a compressed backup of the sbbs folder.
