On Monday, Trump seemed to imply that he would bring a complete end to Iran with nuclear bombs. When it was pointed out to him that his message was being interpreted that way, further clarification soon followed, because such an idiotic suggestion goes a bit too far even for some Republicans.
It was already seen in the rest of the world as completely crazy bluff. Soon after, the news emerged that he would have Iran's bridges destroyed one by one. A war crime, but at least not genocide by nuclear weapons.
Still TACO bluff, if only because there are 300,000 bridges in Iran.
Trump is running out of time, and the fact that Iran refuses to surrender is a disaster for Trump. He is now making a complete fool of himself, because in the meantime, Iran is keeping the Strait of Hormuz closed. Meanwhile, the world is hurtling towards an energy crisis, and that is thanks to Israel and the US. Iran has rejected all American demands and has come up with a list of 10 demands of its own. That is how strong they are, after all. Iran has not been defeated. Far from it.
If Trump orders the destruction of Iran's bridges and civil infrastructure, Iran has already announced that it will destroy the neighboring countries as well. Iran itself gains little from this, but it puts Trump under extra pressure, because the US seems unable to provide the promised protection against Iran. So, should it come to that, it will be over and out for the US's power in those countries, because what good is American protection if it effectively does not exist?
For too long, the lesson of Ukraine has been ignored in Washington. The contempt for Ukraine was so great that they refused to accept the lessons the country had learned. American magnanimity, and that is now coming back to haunt them.
For Ukraine, a chance to make new friends.
Then, last night, the news came that the US has accepted Iran's 10 points for two weeks. That is the worst deal an American president has ever made in the region. Those 10 points constitute a proposal for a 14-day ceasefire, also valid for Lebanon and Gaza. Israel would agree to it, yet not entirely, because Israel refuses to include Lebanon and Gaza in the agreement.
This ceasefire is therefore doomed to fail. The stock market will undoubtedly react very positively, but I am not convinced that this marks the end of the war.
