they lobby the government to reduce
your protections while also lobbying to
get the government to subsidize your
existence under their employ so that

European countries ended both the slave
trade and slavery long before we did,
and that it was both those nations left
and a combination of those on the left
and right not in power in the US that

time) who were largely working class
hated slavery both morally and becaue

party, it was still ultimately also a
pro-business party at the end of the
day. After the issue of slavery was

into public life, the rich folk did
what rich folk tend to do and started
legislatin to protect their business
interests, across party lines. Not all
at once, and for a while afterwards
Republicans were still the better party
for Civil Rights, but by the 1890s both
parties were effectively the same as
regards people of color, generally.
Both were interested in big industry,
the gold standard, destroying labor
unions, federalizing state militias,
and ultimately shafting workers and
anyone with melanin. Neither party was
keen givin out entitlements of any
kind. It took Republican Teddy
Roosevelt, Socialist Eugene Debbs, and
the work of unions and interest groups
to get basic things for the
impoverished through government. And
even then, it still sucked. FDR for
example was pressured by both parties
to have racial exceptions included in
many aspects of the New Deal. Ike
didn't exactly turn that around.

So the reality is both parties sucks,
neither one is great toward anyone, and
while the GOP can lay claim to the
legacy of ending slavery, they have
squandered that ever since. Both
