I am writing this from my desktop where I have better conrol over the special characters....

I have configured Fidomail with "Michiel's iPhone" as origin line. ( Without the double quotes. )

Note the apostrophe between the 'l' and the 's'.

A user in a Dutch echo attended me to the fact that Fidomail translates the apostrophe into Three "garbage" characters on his screen. He used an non UTF-8 capable reader.

On investigation it turns out that Fidomail - when configured to use UTF-8 as the standard encoding - translates the apostrophe into something "better". The right single quotation mark. Unicode point U+2019, UTF-8 E2 80 99.

I think this is too much!. Almost all Dutch text is perfectly readable without UTF-8 and most readers still use 8 bit software. This translation to a "better" character has practically no added value and in many cases makes it worse. In this particular case it is also wrong. The apostrophe in "Michiel's" is not a quote character, it is a separator. The apostrophe before the 's' serves to distinguish between the plural and the posessive. It should not be touched at all.

Please find a way to disable this "feature".

There is more. Further investigation in the the matter of quote characters revealed the following "improvements" to be done by Fidomail:

'single quote' --> 'single quote' (alt 0145 alt 0146)

"double quote" --> "double quote" (alt 0147 alt 0148)

These may look nicer in many cases and for writing a novel it would be fine. But for Fidonet? The added value is doubtfull and in many cases it is in the way in a technical network. Most parsers will be confused when using these "better" quotes. I think that at least there should be an option to disable this feature and only allow the user to explicitly enter these special characters himself.

BTW in Dutch we tradionally use " (alt 0132) as the leading quote character. At least that is how I learned it at elementary school now almost three quarters of a century ago. I still use it in hand written text.

Aghh, I had the deafuot charset setto CP850... So Golded translated all the special quote characters back to normal ASCII.

So here are the porper characters:

'single quote' --> 'single quote' (alt 0145 alt 0146)

'single quote' --> ‘single quote’ (alt 0145 alt 0146)

"double quote" --> "double quote" (alt 0147 alt 0148)

"double quote" --> “double quote” (alt 0147 alt 0148)

It's not actually an FMM feature, but Apple's:

Plain U+0027 apostrophe. The previous one was U+2019.

BTW, I was trying to submit the app for review at some point with real users names in screenshots, with all active users, to show my support for your efforts, but had to remove them because of that terrible Russian RuStore app store.

They asked me from the beginning to get users approval to publish their posts in the app description.

And they still haven't approved the app!

I'll add all the names to the about page once I'm on the Google Store (I hope it happens next Monday).
