Hello All!

What is new in FidoMail Mobile 0.1.1+78:

- There is now a build for Windows, and one for Linux. Unpack the
archive and run fidomail_mobile.exe - the whole folder is needed,
not the .exe alone. Same program as on Android; notifications are
not wired up on Windows yet.
- Connections now try IPv6 first when your network and the node
both have it. Dart always dialled IPv4 first; now both families
are raced (RFC 8305) and the first to answer wins.
- Fixed: on an IPv6-only mobile network, a server addressed by a
bare IPv4 address could not connect at all.
- New per-server setting "Connect over", if you ever need to force
"Prefer IPv6" or "IPv4 only".

Of course this was developed for browsers where there is a user waiting for the respons. Binkp is for machines and machines don't mind taking a bit extra time. Binkd just tries IPv6 first and only if it fails falls back to IPv4. Works fine for a mailer...

I am now running 0.1.2 which supports IPv6. I notice the following.

Selecting : "Auto" seems to boil down to "Prefers IPv4". Whenever I try, it always connects to IPv4 with this setting. So it either IS "prefer IPv4" or IPv4 always wins the race you describe. Without giving the IPv6 a little headstart as in "Happy Eyeballs". As an IPv6 evangelist I would prefer IPv6 to have a small advantage.

What I also have not tried yet is to connect to an IPv4 only server from an IPv6 only netwwork. What happens? No connection? Or does it try NAT64/DNS64?

Tested from the Wifi in the nearby supermarket. Like almost all (semi)public WiFi networks it is IPv4 only. Connected in all three setting. (Auto, prefer IPv6, IPv4 only).

Right now it's implemented as some sort of Happy Eyeballs - it queries DNS with getaddrinfo and if IPv6 comes first, it uses IPv6. I made a small change so now it gets both IPv4 and IPv6, with IPv6 having a 250 ms advantage for binkp connection. If no answer is received from IPv6 within 250 ms, it falls back to IPv4.

Could you paste the corresponding section from log? Menu -> Mail activity -> Press on "Protocol details".

It should be working on ipv6 only network! Can't find any bugs in code for that.

Apple should do DNS64, so it should not be a problem.

But…. It is more complicated. The problem only occurs when I am on the same local network as the server. When I connect from another network, so that the poll comes from “outside” it connects without problems.

I've added additional IPv6 debug info to the new version 0.1.5+84 which is currently being approved by Apple. It should show the resolved IP address and the internal logic of how the software chooses between IPv4/IPv6 paths.

BTW, the new version with extended debug log is already in Apple App Store.

Apple is very fast!

Google demanded 14 days with 12 users to get into Google Play (8 more days to wait..).

And Russian "RuStore", which has only "very good for average Russian, no western rusophobic software" :) rejected my app after 5 days, demanding approval from some "Fidonet trademark owner."

I had to explain to them that it's not possible, but still not sure I'll pass their moderation :))
